Steel wire ropes have a much higher tensile strength than stainless steel wire ropes, but one of the weaknesses of steel wire ropes is their low resistance to environmental conditions such as humidity, which causes them to oxidize.
Galvanized wire ropes include many textures, structures and specifications. Stainless steel wire ropes have anti-rust properties due to the presence of chromium and nickel in their chemical structure. On this basis, galvanized steel towing wire is used.
In the production of towing wire, steel is used as the main alloy. The iron element with a very high percentage is the main constituent of this type of steel ropes, which includes metallic elements with unstable electrons and prone to covalent bonding with oxygen. Therefore, steel towing wire without galvanized plating will rust in contact with water, moisture and many acidic and alkaline substances in nature.
The combination of iron element with oxygen in water and turning into Fe2O3 or iron oxide, which is called steel rusting process, appears in the form of orange color on the surface of the towing wire.

Galvanized towing wires generally have 2 types of plating including hot galvanized and cold galvanized towing wire. These two types have very important similarities and differences. We will discuss each of them separately.

Cold galvanized:
Cold galvanized wires, which are often less than 20 microns thick, are used in most wire ropes and are made at a low temperature by placing a very thin layer of zinc metal on the surface of the wires. This surface layer can be scratched, and if the cold galvanized towing wire is scratched, it will be on the verge of rusting.
Hot dip galvanized:
The plating of the towing wire is done in hot galvanizing operations at high temperature and with surface penetration of zinc into the steel surface of the wire, which has a very long life and resistance to rust even with surface scratches on the wires.
Appearance characteristics of hot galvanized and cold galvanized wire ropes:
The cold galvanized towing wire is shiny silver and the hot galvanized towing wire is matte silver. Since the temperature of the hot-dip galvanizing process is close to the heat-hardening operation temperature of the towing wires, this process must be carried out with high precision so that there is no significant tensile loss in the hot-dip galvanized towing wires.
